The Eugene Genga-coached side moved toeighth place at 13 points.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men's league side University of Nairobi (UoN) Terror picked their fourth victory in the league this season on the weekend when they Umoja's onslaught for a 54-49 victory.
Skipper Pharez Adala maintains that the team is still on course for their target of reaching this season's playoffs despite the first leg performance.
"We had a good game against Umoja, dominating the first half but they came back for the second half more aggressive than us and fought hard, as we expected, but we managed to hold them off," offered Adala.
Against Umoja, the varsity side led 18-9 in the first period and scored 19-8 in the second period to head to the break with a 20 point advantage.
Umoja, however, came off the locker room guns blazing outscoring the varsity side 10-5 in the third quarter to reduce the gap to 15 points.
The real drama was, however, witnessed in the final period where Moses Alier score 15 points from two treys with the rest being conversions on the free-throw line to bring Umoja to within a point of equalling Terror's score with less than two minutes on the clock.
The students managed to pulled themselves together and hold on for a win as the final quarter ended 22-12 in favour of Umoja.
"Our ultimately goal is to be in the playoffs and play better than we did last season and we are still on course as we have the second leg to play.
We, however, have to work on our aggressiveness, while staying out of foul trouble, and be able to dictate the tempo of matches by putting up a fight," the skipper added.
Terror made it to the playoffs quarters last season but were eliminated by Equity Dumas in the best-of-three series.
